The Original Band of the Red Hand was a unit of the ledgendary hero's during the Trolloc Wars. It is said they were the last to fall to the Trollocs, guarding King Aemon himself, when Manetheren died. Wheather he [ Matrim Cauthon ] knows the history behind the name of his group or not Cauthon seems to be attempting to re-create the standardization of size, designation, and composition of units that has not been since before the War of the Hundred Years.

The Band has about 6,000 men. They are divided into half, one half mounted the other half foot. The mounted half is divided into two groups the size of a banner. ( fifteen hundred horse or three thousand Infantry )

The Band marches at Matrim Cauthon's command. Mat leads the band with knowledge from long ago. No one knows where he came about the amazing knowledge of military strategy.
